Chub Perseveres Through Rain-Plagued World of Outlaws Late Model Series Ohio Speedweek

BEAR LAKE, PA – After back-to-back quiet nights in World of Outlaws Late Model Series Ohio Speedweek action, Chub Frank appeared primed to end the rain-plagued swing with a flourish on his home turf.

But Mother Nature had other ideas, dumping rain on Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., near the end of Sunday evening’s time-trial session to bring an early close to the Speedweek finale.

Sunday’s WoO LMS event at Eriez – a one-third-mile oval where Chub has turned many laps during his career – was rescheduled for Sun., Aug. 23, but that was little consolation to the veteran driver from Bear Lake, Pa. He wanted to race on Sunday night – Chub, after al l, was sitting a sterling third on the time-trial list when a cloudburst doused the track with just two of the program’s 54 entrants left to qualify.

“It’s too bad the weather had to ruin the night,” said Chub, who will have to re-qualify with the rest of his rivals when the WoO LMS returns to Eriez on Aug. 23. “We finally qualified good and we were at a track we know, so I felt good about our chances.”

Chub was counting on the Eriez event to help him forget his frustrating Ohio Speedweek results. He wasn’t a factor in the other two events that beat the weather, finishing 13th on Friday night (July 24) at Attica Raceway Park and 11th on Saturday night (July 25) at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio.

The driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ had to rally just to salvage a 13th-place finish at Attica. He slapped the turn-four wall after a scrape with Jason Montgomery on the second lap of the first B-Main, inflicting damage to his Corry Rubber/Lake Shore Paving/Hino Toyota/All-Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Custom Race Engines/GW Performance Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* that forced him to use a provisional to start the 50-lap A-Main from the 25th position.

Chub also visited Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio, for the opener of Ohio Speedweek on July 23, but that event was postponed to Aug. 20 by rain that fell after the first heat race was completed. He timed 30th-fastest among the 45-car field, but a complete new round of time trials will be contested when the series returns.

Chub, ended the swing ranked eighth in the WoO LMS points standings (222 points behind leader Josh Richards), plans to take this weekend off from competition. He expects to race next weekend, but he has not yet decided his schedule.
