BEAR LAKE, PA – A victory. A runner-up finish. A seventh-place finish. Yes, it was a pretty solid holiday weekend for dirt Late Model star Chub Frank – and best of all, he ran all three races virtually in his backyard. After logging thousands of highway miles this summer, Chub got a chance to run close to home for three consecutive days. He gave his local fans plenty to cheer about, winning the 35-lap Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) A-Main on Friday night (Aug. 31) at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., and registering finishes of second (Saturday) and seventh (Sunday) in the two 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series events that made up the ‘Oil Region Labor Day Classic’ at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa. Chub was triumphant at Lernerville for the second time in a 15-day span, nicely following up his ‘NASCAR Night of Stars’ win on Aug. 16. He was almost perfect on Friday night, winning a heat race, the dash and leading all 35 laps of the feature from the pole position; the only blemish on his ledger was his second-fastest time-trial lap. “It was another great night at Lernerville for us,” said Chub, who earned $5,000 for his efforts. “I always love racing at Lernerville. The track is always real raceable, and it was again on Friday. You can’t ask for a better place to race.” The Lernerville victory gave Chub 16 career wins on the MACS tour, ranking him second on the alltime series win list behind Todd Andrews (17 wins) even though he’s never been a MACS regular. Chub got back to WoO LMS action on Saturday and Sunday at Tri-City, a half-mile oval located about 40 minutes from his shop in Bear Lake, Pa. He entered the weekend doubleheader ranked second in the tour points standings – 38 points behind Steve Francis – and with high hopes of cutting that gap after winning a WoO LMS event at Tri-City last year. It looked like Chub might author a replay of ’06 in the weekend’s first 50-lapper. He won a heat race and started fourth in the A-Main, but he couldn’t quite find the power to keep Francis from reaching Victory Lane. Francis slipped by Chub for position early in the race and grabbed the lead on lap 20; Chub reached second moments after Francis assumed command, but he never seriously challenged Francis in a race that ran non-stop for 50 laps after a caution flag on the original start. “I don’t think that speed-wise (Francis) was any faster, but his car was more maneuverable than mine,” said Chub. “When we got to running, he could maneuver around traffic a lot better than I could.” Chub struggled in Saturday night’s 50-lap headliner, finishing a quiet seventh after starting eighth in his Lester Buildings, Corry Rubber, All Star Performance, Corry Laser, Slavic Corporation, Farr MotorSports, Lake Shore Paving, Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. He was disappointed after missing on both his setup and tire-compound choices, but – like everyone else in the pit area – he was happy to see good-guy racer Dan Stone pull off a popular upset win. The weekend ended with Chub still second in the WoO LMS points standings, but now trailing Francis by 52 points. There are nine tour events remaining in the 2007 season. Chub now heads to Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 7-8) for the prestigious World 100. He will drive the same car he ran at Tri-City, but it will carry a new body that sports a special-edition paint and graphics package. Green will be the dominant color of the machine, which will take on a ‘Chubzilla’ theme with dinosaur-like ‘scales’ and headlights that look like the mean eyes of a monster. The Chub-Slavic merchandise trailer will offer special-edition World 100 paint scheme apparel and a limited number of diecast cars for sale throughout the weekend’s festivities as well as on Chub’s web site located at www.chubfrank.com |
