Chub Returns to Portsmouth Raceway Park

Chub and the 1* Corry Rubber, Corry Laser, Nystrom's Auto Sales, Draime Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis, Pierotti Motorsports, Chevrolet Monte Carlo made the trip Saturday to Portsmouth Raceway Park in Portsmouth, OH Saturday and Sunday, August 30 and 31.Two separate shows will be presented by Portsmouth Raceway Park owners Boone, Joyce and Tim Coleman along with promoter Max Warnock for the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series with nearly $70,000 in purse money offered. Saturday's event will be the "Rumble By The River 50" while Sunday's the "Pepsi 100" at the semi-banked 3/8ths mile track. In 31 previous sanctioned events at P.R.P., twelve different drivers have wound up in victory circle with Chub Frank scoring seven previous wins including this seasons August 2 appearance at Portsmouth Raceway Park.

On Saturday the Chub & the 1* crew arrived at Portsmouth Raceway ready to race and set 4th quick time in the Carrera Shocks "Challenge the Clock" time trials out of 41 cars entered for the "Rumble By The River 50". Chub would now line up the 1* in the 4th heat in the 4th position where he would finish in 3rd transferring him into the Isky Racing Cams Dash for tonight. Chub finished the dash in 3rd and would now line up in 3rd behind Robbie Blair & Mike Balzano for the main event. On the start of the feature Robbie & Mike raced side by side for the first 2 laps with Robbie leading the 1st lap and Davey Johnson 3rd with Chub in 4th and Jackie Boggs in 5th. Mike ran in the middle of the track while Robbie hugged the bottom on the second circuit with Balzano inching ahead at the start/finish line. Johnson got wide exiting turn four dropping him to sixth putting Chub back in 3rd. Balzano stayed comfortably in front of Blair as the laps wore on. With ten laps to go Chub went to the extreme outside of the track exiting turn four with 6 laps to go but slapped the wall with right side of the car tearing the rear spoiler off, Johnson seized the opportunity working past Chub with three laps to go. Chub would finish in 4th behind Mike Balzano, Robbie Blair & Davey Johnson

With the $10,000 to win "Pepsi 100" feature event close to rolling onto the speedway Sunday, rain moved over Portsmouth Raceway Park forcing officials to postpone the Renegade DirtCar Racing Series main event to Friday, September 12. Only 2 laps remained in the first of two P.R.P. Modified division "B" Main events, with the "Pepsi 100" scheduled after the Modified "B" Mains, when the rain began to fall. After waiting for nearly an hour for the rain to subside and forecasters calling for the rain to continue the decision was made to postpone the remainder of the event. All rain checks will be honored for the make-up of the postponed feature event. Gates will open at 4:00pm with warm-ups at 6:45pm and racing to begin at 7:30pm.

The $42,000 purse event drew 46 drivers to the semi-banked 3/8ths mile speedway with Chub Frank earning the CARRERA SHOCKS "Challenge the Clock" time trial award with his fast lap of 14.989 seconds. Chub also copped the first BRODIX, INC. heat race with the other heat races falling to R.J. Conley, Rick Aukland and Jim Bernheisel.

Scoring the MASTERSBILT RACE CARS "B" Main events were Lance Elson and Matt Urban

While the ISKY RACING CAMS dash fell to Rob Blair.
