BEAR LAKE, PA – Sept. 24, 2007 – Chub
made sure his unique ‘Chubzilla’ dirt Late Model won’t be remembered just
for its striking appearance. The bright green machine is now also a
winner. Chub steered the special-edition machine to victory on Friday night at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway, winning the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Bedford 50’ with a powerful performance. Back on the track after its debut run in the recent World 100 at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway ended in disappointing fashion when Chub crashed in his heat race, the ‘Chubzilla’ themed car drew plenty of attention parked in Bedford’s Victory Lane. |

“Tonight was a lot better than the
World,” smiled Chub. “The World wasn’t a good deal, so we decided we’d run
this body again closer to home and see if we could come up with some
better results.” Chub inherited the lead on lap 16 of the 50-lap A-Main when Virginia’s Bo Feathers stopped with mechanical trouble. He never looked back over the remaining distance in his distinctly-skinned Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. Chub, who started third in the headliner after timing fourth-fastest and winning a heat race, beat Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., to the finish line by several car lengths. A scrape three laps from the finish with the lapped car driven by Ricky Elliott caused Chub to lose his momentum in turn one and allowed Miller to make a bid for the lead, but Chub held on for his WoO LMS-leading sixth tour win of the 2007 season. “If you can just win against these (WoO LMS) guys, it’s something,” said Chub, who earned $10,225 for his 13th career victory on the series. “If you can be the winningest driver against them, that’s really good.” Chub, who registered his first win at the half-mile Bedford oval since 2000, would like to add the $100,000 WoO LMS championship to his status as the tour’s top winner. The Bedford triumph helped him in that regard, allowing the second-place points man to pull within 40 points of Steve Francis, who finished seventh. After Saturday night’s ‘Pittsburgher 50’ at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway was declared a show-up points event by WoO LMS officials because an open practice session was held at PPMS on Thursday night (a violation of the tour’s rule that prohibits open or private practices at a track within one week of a one-day show), Chub ended the weekend still carrying a 40-point deficit into the final four events of the season. “If I fall short, it won’t be because I didn’t try,” said Chub. “We only gained a little on Francis (at Bedford), but if it puts pressure on him…well, that’s what you gotta do. You gotta put some pressure on him and see what happens.” Chub had a relatively quiet night in Saturday’s ‘Pittsburger 50,’ finishing sixth in a race won by teenager Josh Richards. He timed fifth-fastest and won a heat race driving his green ‘Chubzilla’ car once again, but after drawing the seventh starting spot for the feature he was never able to climb higher than fifth. Chub plans to race close to home again this weekend, competing on Saturday night (Sept. 29) at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa. He will look to defend his 2006 victory in the $12,000-to-win Priority Care Race Fans 50 sanctioned by the United Late Model Series – and also give his local fans another chance to see him run his ‘Chubzilla’ graphics scheme. |
