BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub ended his 2007
season with a quiet, frustrating performance in the inaugural ‘Outlaws
World Finals’ at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but two nights of
subpar runs took nothing away from what he accomplished this year. Yes, the ’07 campaign was a great one for Chub, who was in contention for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series title until the final weekend of action and won more A-Mains on the competitive tour than any other driver. Trailing Steve Francis by 62 points entering the double-feature ‘Outlaws World Finals’ program, Chub was hoping to finish at least five spots in front of Francis in Friday night’s first 50-lap A-Main so he could start Saturday night’s finale with at least an outside chance at his first WoO LMS championship. But his flickering title possibilities were extinguished on Friday night, thanks to a rough A-Main in which he finished 14th to Francis’s steady fourth-place run. A second-place finish in his heat gave Chub the 12th starting spot for Friday’s headliner – six positions ahead of Francis. But Chub slowed his green ‘Chubzilla’ themed car on lap six with a right-rear flat tire and pitted, and later, on lap 22, he pitted again to change a flat left-rear shoe. He spent the remainder of the distance struggling to get around the four-tenths-mile oval, hampered by a bent spindle sustained in a back-of-the-pack tangle. With his top-five outing, Francis clinched the 2007 WoO LMS championship. “I congratulated him right after the race,” Chub said of Francis. “He deserved the championship. He was good all year, and we didn’t match him with top fives and top 10s.” With a career-high second-place finish in the points standings assured entering Saturday night’s ‘World Finals’ show, Chub had no points pressure hanging over his head. But that didn’t translate into a memorable night; instead, he experienced one of his most forgettable starts of an otherwise impeccable season. After failing to qualify through his heat and a B-Main, Chub used just his fourth provisional of the season to start the A-Main. He took the green flag from the 23rd spot and made little headway before retiring with 19 laps completed, done in by a broke stud that caused the air cleaner to come off his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. Chub was credited with a 24th-place finish in the event, which was televised live by the SPEED cable network. It was just the third time in 44 WoO LMS A-Mains this season that he wasn’t running at the finish. “We’re lucky we won the ($50,000) Dirt Track (World Championship) two weeks ago (Ohio’s K-C Raceway) because this weekend sucked,” said Chub, who finished 126 points behind Francis in the final standings. “We never got the car where it needed to be. We definitely weren’t any good. “I guess if we’re gonna keep coming back here, we’re gonna have to figure out something.” Chub said his 2007 season – in which he won a total of 10 features, including six in WoO LMS action – is now complete. He will spend the short off-season gearing up for the 2008 campaign, which he will likely start in late January at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Ga. Chub and The 1* team would also like to thank the following for their support and services without them we couldn’t do it.
