BEAR LAKE, PA –  After 10 long days on the road spent chasing the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Monster Midwest Tour,’ Chub Frank headed home to Bear Lake, Pa., with a big smile on his face.

That’s because the popular driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ closed the five-race swing through five states with a bang, winning Friday night’s ‘Great Lakes 50’ at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich.

It was the first WoO LMS triumph of the 2007 season for Chub, who had experienced an up-and-down ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ before making his first-ever visit to the half-mile I-96 layout.

“We needed this,” said Chub, who registered his eighth career win on the WoO LMS. “We’ve been struggling a little bit, so picking up $10,000 will help pay the fuel bill home.”

The key move of Chub’s night at I-96 came when he pulled off a banzai outside pass of Steve Francis to finish second in the third qualifying heat. That got him in the pre-feature redraw, where he pulled the pole position.

Chub proceeded to lead the 50-lap A-Main from flag-to-flag, keeping his smooth-running Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* ahead of the late-charging Josh Richards to secure the checkered flag.

“It feels good to get a win anywhere,” said Chub. “The car was good tonight, real good. We made some adjustments just before the feature and they were on the money.”

Chub’s best ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ showing prior to I-96 came on May 13 at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway, where he finished a solid fourth in the 40-lap feature after registering the third-fastest lap in time trials and winning a heat.

The remainder of Chub’s results from the swing included a 16th-place finish on May 9 at the Davenport (Iowa) Speedway Quarter Mile; 10th place (from the 16th starting spot) on May 12 at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis.; and 15th place on May 16 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway (after he made a pit stop during a lap-15 caution period).

“The trip wasn’t bad,” Chub summarized following his victory at I’96. “Before tonight we were making mistakes, picking wrong tires. That’s just part of the game, but we gotta stop that. I think that when we get back on some tracks that we know, we probably won’t have that.”

Chub ended the ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ tied for fifth in the WoO LMS point standings with Rick Eckert. At 48 points behind leader Shannon Babb, he remains well within striking distance of the tour championship.

With the WoO LMS off until events on May 31 at Delaware International Speedway and June 2 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway, Chub plans to stay close to home this weekend to compete in a very special event at Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y. The ‘Stateline Memorial’ program on Sat., May 26 – featuring twin A-Mains paying $5,000 to win each – honors the memories of Chub’s late mother, Janet Frank, as well as Leonard Briggs and Lloyd Williams.
