Chub Enjoys ‘Stars of NASCAR Night’ Victory

Chub experienced an enjoyable night at one of his favorite racetracks last Thursday (Aug. 16).

In his lone competitive outing during the final week of his extended break from World of Outlaws Late Model Series action, Chub stayed close to home and drove to victory in the 35-lap ‘Stars of NASCAR Night’ Super Late Model special at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.

Once again showing a mastery of his homestate’s four-tenths-mile oval that he’s developed over the years, Chub passed Robbie Blair for the lead on a lap-30 restart and marched on to the win. He earned $3,000 for triumphing in an event that featured NASCAR Nextel Cup stars Tony Stewart and Kenny Schrader competing in Super Late Models.

Schrader, in fact, was Chub’s teammate for the night. Chub fielded a second Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* for Schrader, who qualified through a B-Main but did Chub proud by marching from the 21st starting spot to a fifth-place finish in the feature.

“Schrader made me some money,” smiled Chub. “He ran a great race. He didn’t put a scratch on my car.”

Chub started closer to the front of the field than Schrader, but it took him almost the entire distance to reach the top spot. He spent many laps battling for second with Blair, but the tussle among friends ultimately became a race for the lead after David Scott relinquished the position when he stopped to bring out a caution flag on lap 24.

After unsuccessfully challenging Blair for six more laps, a caution flag on lap 30 was Chub’s ticket to the win. He drove around the outside of Blair’s No. won11 when the green flag flew and pulled away to take the checkered flag first.

Chub held on despite racing the final circuits with power-steering problems.

“It was a good win for us,” said Chub, who captured his sixth overall victory (first non-WoO LMS) of 2007. “I always enjoy racing at Lernerville, and we won with a car that I wasn’t really happy with the last time I ran it (nearly a month ago at Maryland’s Hagerstown Speedway).”

Chub opted to take the remainder of the weekend off from racing to prepare his equipment for the stretch run of the WoO LMS schedule, which shows 13 events remaining. The tour swings back into action this week with the $20,000-to-win ‘Scorcher 100’ on Aug. 21-23 at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn., and a $10,000-to-win 50-lapper at K-C Raceway in Alma, Ohio, on Sat., Aug. 25.

The 45-year-old professional driver from Bear Lake, Pa., currently ranks third in the WoO LMS points standings, 44 points behind leader Steve Francis.
