BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub Frank almost decided
to skip last weekend’s 27th annual Dirt Track World Championship Presented
by gottarace.com at K-C Raceway in Alma, Ohio. But after the Bear Lake, Pa., driver pocketed $50,000 for winning the 100-lap crown-jewel dirt Late Model event on Saturday night, there was no place he would have rather been. “I guess I’m glad we made the trip,” said Chub, who hedged on traveling to south-central Ohio until feeling certain that the weather wouldn’t cause a postponement. “I told Brad (Baum, his crew chief) that I’d call him early on Friday morning and let him know if we were going or not. Once I saw that the rain looked like it was clearing out, I told Brad I’d see him at the garage at 7 (a.m.).” With many of the 117 cars that entered the program already in the pit area when Chub arrived at the three-eighths-mile oval, he parked his hauler on the access road outside the pit gate. But his pit location was the furthest thing from his mind after he scored one of the biggest wins of his career. |

“We’ve been close in this race before,” said Chub, who entered the weekend with five top-five finishes in nine career DTWC A-Main starts. “We ran second to Freddy Smith (in 1993) back when the race was at (West Virginia’s) Pennsboro (Speedway), so it feels great to finally win one.” The DTWC joins Chub’s list of previous major-event triumphs, including the 2004 World 100 at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway, the 2002 North-South 100 at Kentucky’s Florence Speedway, the 2001 Dixie Shootout at Georgia’s Dixie Speedway (a career-high $55,000 payday) and the 2001 Pittsburgher 100 at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway (2001). “Getting both ‘Worlds’ (the World 100 and DTWC) is definitely a feather in your cap for your resume,” said Chub. “The only problem is we’ve only won them once, so we still have that to work on.” Driving his green ‘Chubzilla’-themed Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*, Chub drew the pole position for the DTWC after registering a hard-fought heat win over Eddie Carrier Jr. on Friday night. The early laps of the A-Main saw Chub fall to third place, but he gradually moved back to the front. He passed Mike Marlar for second on lap 39 and shortly thereafter began an intense battle for the lead with fellow World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular Josh Richards. Finally, on lap 56, Chub moved ahead of Richards in lapped traffic to grab the lead for good. He withstood two restarts on lap 79 on his way to a half-straightaway margin of victory over Richards. “Josh and I were side-by-side for about 10 or 15 laps,” said Chub. “I didn’t know if I was better than him. There was a brown strip of moisture down near the uke tire on the inside of turn one, and I could cut across it and make up two or three car lengths going in. I kept working it, but it wasn’t easy to clear him. “It really took lapped traffic to get me all the way by him. I got him pinned behind a lapped car and he had to get out of it because I had the lane.” Chub just kept an eye on the scoreboard for the remainder of the distance. “As long as that No. 1 (Richards’s car) was in second on the scoreboard, I felt a little more confident,” said Chub. “I didn’t think that he was gonna all of a sudden pick up a half-second and get back to me, so I just watched for other numbers to move up on the scoreboard. “I did see (Steve) Shaver’s number show up on there, and later I saw (Steve) Francis’s number up in third. But I never saw anybody get by Josh, so I thought we’d be O.K.” The victory was Chub’s 10th overall of 2007 in 56 starts – and by far his richest and most meaningful. “It’s a huge deal to win this race,” said Chub. “Any of these big races are tough. Just about every top guy in the country was there, so just making the show is hard. When you win one, you know you earned it.” Chub will take this weekend off to prepare for the WoO LMS season finale, the inaugural ‘Outlaws World Finals’ on Nov. 1-3 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. Two 50-lap A-Mains will provide Chub his last chance to overtake Steve Francis for the 2007 tour points title. Entering the ‘World Finals,’ Chub sits second in the points standings, 62 points behind Francis. Chub fans will also be interested to know that he is featured in a story in the November issue of Car and Driver magazine, the world’s largest automotive publication. He’s profiled in an article title “Racing Under The Radar.” Chub and The 1* team would also like to thank the following for their support and services without them we couldn’t do it.
