Chubzilla Scorches Field in MACS’ at Lernerville

A near capacity crowd at Barb Bartley and Tom Reonigk’s Lernerville Speedway, Inc., Sarver, PA, greeted the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series tour on Friday as Chub Frank, Bear Lake, PA, for the second year in-a-row scorched the field taking home the $5,000 top prize from the $30,000 purse.

Former, two-time MACS Champion, Lynn Geisler and Frank paced the 27-car field starting for the “Purvis Brothers Turbo Blue 50”. As the green waved, Frank bolted into the lead with Geisler; R.J. Conley; defending MACS champion, Rob Blair and former MACS Champion Mike Blose all in hot contention for the top spot.

Several slow downs occurred in the early stages with three cautions waving in the first two circuits but none of that deterred the leader, Frank. By lap 2, Blair slotted into second over Geisler; Mike Balzano, who started in seventh; and Conley.

Frank was flexing his muscle as he was trying to escape Blair’s onslaught for the lead. The final caution of the event flew on lap 15 regrouping the field. Frank was still on point over Blair; Geisler; Balzano; and Bob Close, from tenth.

Frank fired at the cone with the quintet hotly after the leader. Frank was dominating as he stretched out a 15-car advantage entering lapped traffic on lap 24. Lap after lap, car after car, Frank picked off drivers scrapping off his would be challengers.

With 15 laps remaining Frank had lapped up to 13th position as he continued his torrid pace with as many as nine lapped cars between himself and Blair. Frank was conducting a driving clinic not missing a beat at any corner, as he lapped cars at will. Little did he know the battle for spots behind him was ragging as fierce competition existed for each position.

With five laps remaining Frank led over Blair, Balzano, Geisler, and Close. Coming to the checkers Frank maintained a comfortable margin of victory over Blair, Balzano, Geisler, and Close. Rounding out the top ten were R.J. Conley; Rod Conley, from thirteenth; 2002 MACS WRISCO Aluminum ROY Keith Barbara, missed the call to the line-up after feverously replacing a broken birdcage and started scratch on the field; and Alex Ferree.
