Once
again Chub Frank has found himself earning yet another passage in the history books with his victory in last Sunday’s STARS
sanctioned “35th Annual HILLBILLY 100” at Tyler County Speedway in Middleborne, WV where Frank earned a whopping $25,000 for
his win. Starting seventh on the grid, Frank was able to overtake the lead on lap 40 and maintain control of the race for
the remaining 60 circuits. Frank won the prestigious event in his Corry Rubber/Slavic Custom T – Shirts/Nystrom's Auto
Sales/Draime Racing Engines/Rocket Chassis/Pierotti Motorsports/Chevrolet Monte Carlo #1*. |
“Well, it feels good because we needed that actually,” commented Frank, of Bear Lake, PA, immediately following the race. “It’s been a long weekend with a lot of driving and everyone is tired. But everybody is happy! And when everyone is tired and down it pumps everyone up.”

It was no easy time for Frank as the event was held on Tyler County’s fast Ľ mile track with plenty of competition in front.
“I think we fell back to ninth or tenth I think,” related Frank about the start of the event. “The outside row had softer tires and some of them took off and it took a couple laps to get going but once we got going we were able to start passing. They had a wreck on the front straightway and a couple leaders got into that because they were passing lapped cars. After the restart I think we were up to sixth.”
“Corey Conley was leading and I think he went a little soft on tires and when he went into lapped traffic he started slowing down and (Steve) Francis went to the highside of (Steve) Shaver to get by him and I went to the low side and we got bottled up with lapped traffic and I think we were three wide going for the lead and it ended up I got by them. I got Corey in traffic and I think he moved up in front of Francis, so that’s how we ended up getting the lead.”
“That place is so fast and short!”
Frank also found the surface to his liking considering the fact that the day’s activities started in the afternoon.
“It (surface) really wasn’t that bad,” said Frank. “It didn’t rubber up real hard. It was still dusty but not like I’ve seen it before. It wasn’t that bad really. The car worked good. It worked perfect actually.”
Frank won the 35th HILLBILLY 100 over Steve Francis, Mike Balzano, Booper Bare, Steve Shaver, Randle Chupp, Doug Horton, Jackie Boggs, Butch McGill, Bobby Hill, M.T. Hall, Tim Dohm, Chuck Harper, Steve Weigle, Donnie Dotson, Corey Conley, Jim Bernheisel, Rick Aukland, Davey Johnson, Billy Drake, Mark Banal, Rod Revello and Paul Wilmoth, Jr.
Winning the HILLBILLY 100, with several decades of history to it, wasn’t lost on Frank.
“It means a lot to win the Hillbilly,” said Frank. “Course, I guess if it was at Pennsboro it would really be…(laughs)! You know what I’m saying. But I’m happy, we all are. I’ve had a chance to win it before and blew it but it’s a pretty good deal to win that.”
Helping Frank score the win were crew chief Boom Briggs, Adam Beebe and new crewmembers Jimmy Frey and Rich Hart. The new crew adds strength and depth to Frank’s organization. Hart was a former car owner of Frank’s and the two had considerable success. Frey is a long time and well-known crewmember who previously worked for Bart Hartman, Donnie Moran, Bob Pierce, Michael Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Kenny Brightbill, Charlie Swartz and Freddy Smith.
