Bear Lake, Pa. – The 1* team regrouped this week for their trip to KC Raceway for their 2003 season debut Saturday, June 21 at Jim Nier's KC Raceway located near Chillicothe, OH for the $7,000 to win "Summer Sizzler 50". After being in somewhat of a small slump recently Chub decided to regroup this week in preparation for the Renegade Series sanctioned program that was scheduled to compete May 17 at the renovated high-banked 3/8ths mile track but rain canceled that program.

Chub qualified 2nd out of 48 cars entered for tonight’s event and that put him in the 2nd heat starting 4th Chub went on to finish the heat in 2nd and that put him in the Isky Dash, for the first time this year. He finished the dash in 5th and that put the defending 3 time Renegade DirtCar Champion Chub and the Corry Rubber, Corry Laser, Nystrom's Auto Sales, Draime Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis, Pierotti Motorsports, Farr MotorSports Chevrolet Monte Carlo #1* starting in 5th for tonight’s " Summer Sizzler 50" . Chub had Boom Briggs change the setup for the feature and it appears that the changes that Chub made this week might be paying off as he drove up to 2nd and finished in that position and was all over winner Darrell Lanigan at the checkered flag. The top 5 finishers were 1st Darrell Lanigan, 2nd Chub, 3rd Davey Johnson, 4th RJ Conley, 5th Mike Balzano.

Lanigan Locks Up Renegade Series Action at KC Raceway!!!

Chillicothe (Alma), OH 6-21-03

Darrell Lanigan of Union,KY captured his first Renegade DirtCar Racing Series sanctioned main event victory of the season Saturday pocketing the $7,000 top prize in the "Summer Sizzler 50" at Jim Nier's KC Raceway near Chillicothe, OH. Starting from the pole position, Lanigan powered into the lead at the drop of the green flag aboard the Accutex Signs/Hoosier Tire/Turbo Blue Racing Gasoline's No. 29 Darrell Lanigan Autosports Rocket/Cornett Ford Taurus racing unchallenged until lapped traffic allowed Chub Frank to close to within a car length of Lanigan at the finish. Davey Johnson, who started 14th, rode home in third with R.J. Conley fourth and Mike Balzano fifth. Completing the top ten finishers were Jerry Rice in sixth followed by Barry Bragdon, Rob Blair, 17th starting Bart Hartman and Keith Berner.

Lanigan and Rice brought the 25 car starting field to the green flag with Lanigan beating Rice off of turn two for the lead. But, before all cars crossed the start/finish line on the opening lap Aaron Bapst smacked the front chute wall bringing out the caution forcing a complete restart. Lanigan again beat Rice off of turn two to grab the early race lead with Rice, Steve Casebolt, Conley and Frank trailing at the end of the first lap. Lanigan began to pull away from the field as Conley took third from Casebolt on lap 2 with Frank moving Casebolt back another spot the next lap.

Lanigan had opened up a healthy margin on the field by lap 10 with Conley now second ahead of Frank, Rice and Balzano with Bragdon, Johnson, Berner, Dave Troutman and John Mason trailing. Casebolt dropped off the high side of the racetrack entering turn three at this point piling into the turn four wall and ending his evening. On the restart, Lanigan used the "Delaware Double-File" restart to once again pull away from the field. Frank shot past Conley for second while Balzano moved past Rice on lap 11 with Johnson breaking into the top five on lap 13.

Lanigan was all by himself when he entered lapped traffic on lap 22 allowing Frank to close the gap on the leader. Lanigan worked his way past the back markers by the halfway point of the race with Frank seven car lengths behind trailed by Conley, Balzano and Johnson with Rice sixth ahead of Bragdon, Berner, Troutman and Blair. Lanigan's lead was quickly gone the next lap when Rob Sellars spun in turn two to bring out the yellow flag.

Frank tried to stay with Lanigan on the restart but the leader was able to pull away while Johnson took fourth from Balzano on lap 27. Caution again on lap 31 for a Tony Traficant accident in turn three slowed the pace. Just like before, Lanigan pulled away from the field on the restart while Johnson grabbed the third spot from Conley on lap 32. With 10 laps in the books Lanigan enjoyed a nearly 1 second lead over Frank with Johnson third, Conley fourth and Balzano fifth trailed by Rice, Bragdon, Blair, Berner and Hartman.

Lanigan entered heavy lapped traffic two laps later and with the three lapped cars racing each other hard for position Lanigan suddenly saw his huge lead dwindle lap after lap. With two laps to go Frank pulled to within two cars lengths of the leader and with the white flag waving Frank was now right on the back bumper of Lanigan as they raced into turn one. Lanigan used the middle groove off turn two to split the back markers giving him the cushion needed to snare the victory.
