BEAR LAKE, PA – Finishing sixth in last Thursday night’s ‘Scorcher 100’
at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn., certainly didn’t excite the
hyper-competitive Chub Frank. But all things considered, the solid run satisfied him. “I was happy with that,” Chub said of his finish in the $100,000-plus World of Outlaws Late Model Series event. “It was good for us.” Specifically, Chub’s advance from the 18th starting spot to sixth place at the checkered flag gave him an important boost in the WoO LMS points standings. He hopped to second in the rankings over Clint Smith, who experienced problems and finished 19th; he now is within 38 points of leader Steve Francis, who placed ninth. “It was a good points night for us,” said Chub. “We only gained a few points on Francis, but every point counts. Hopefully we can keep chipping away and catch him.” The 45-year-old star from Bear Lake, Pa., had to battle through some adversity during the three-day meet at the high-banked, four-tenths-mile oval. For starters, a motor problem developed on his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* during Tuesday night’s late practice session, forcing Chub and crew chief Brad Baum to stay up until the wee hours of the morning installing a backup powerplant. Then, with five laps remaining in Thursday night’s 100-lap feature, the air cleaner blew off Chub’s car due to a broken stud, causing him to worry that dirt might get into his engine. Chub climbed as high as fifth in the ‘Scorcher 100,’ but fellow WoO LMS regular Rick Eckert overtook him for the position on lap 63. “Eckert was good,” said Chub. “I got tight or loose, depending on how hard I drove it in the corner, and he just rolled around me on the outside.” Chub made the nearly 400-mile trip to K-C Raceway in Alma, Ohio, for Saturday night’s scheduled WoO LMS event, but the program was postponed by a thunderstorm that struck just as cars were beginning to roll onto the track for practice. WoO LMS officials are expected to announce a new date for the event in the coming days. The WoO LMS will come to Chub’s backyard this weekend, with the two-day Oil Region Labor Day Classic set for Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 1-2) at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa. Complete $10,000-to-win, 50-lap shows will be run each night at the half-mile oval, where Chub was victorious in the first half of the WoO LMS weekend one year ago. |
