Three Top-Fives & Birth Of 2nd Granddaughter
Highlight Chub’s Weekend

BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub was winless during last weekend’s three-race World of Outlaws Late Model Series swing through the Midwest.

But that doesn’t mean it was a disappointing weekend for the superstar driver known as ‘Chubzilla.’

Chub had three good nights on the track (top-five finishes in all three events) and received great news from the home front (the birth of his second granddaughter).

“It was a good weekend racing for us with three top-fives, and a great weekend in general because of the new granddaughter,” smiled Chub.

Chub’s wife Mary’s daughter gave birth to a baby girl, Delana Sandra Smith, on Sun., Sept. 16, a few minutes after midnight. Chub, whose other granddaughter was, ironically, also born on Sept. 16, learned of the delivery shortly after finishing fourth in Saturday night’s 50-lap ‘Pepsi Nationals’ event at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.

The Bear Lake, Pa., resident began the WoO LMS swing with a fourth-place finish on Friday night at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway. A heat winner earlier in the night, Chub started fourth in the ‘Paducah 50’ but lost several positions before moving back up to finish in the same spot, barely a car length behind third-place Jimmy Mars.

Chub scored another fourth-place finish on Saturday night at Ken Schrader’s I-55 Raceway, but he felt he had a better run in his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. The race’s ninth starter, Chub sat third for the final restart on lap 47 but watched Shannon Babb step to the extreme outside of turns one and two to pass him. Chub then shifted to the top groove and pushed Randy Korte for third place on the last lap but ran out of time.

“I was soft on tires and I was trying to save ‘em,” said Frank. “I didn’t have a scoreboard to look at to know what lap it was, so I waited too long to make a move.

“I should’ve just rolled ‘em (the leaders) on the outside earlier. My car was better than Babb’s up there, so I knew I could roll the top. I almost ran into the back of Korte and Babb on the last lap when I tried running up there.”

Chub closed the swing with a third-place finish in Sunday night’s 40-lap ‘Best Western Illinois Fall Nationals’ A-Main at La Salle (Ill.) Speedway. At the start of the night he earned his second National Interstate Insurance Fast Time Award of the season, and he put on a show moving forward from the eighth starting spot in the feature.

Tossing his car through the quarter-mile track’s thick cushion with wild abandon, Chub appeared ready to pass both Darrell Lanigan and eventual winner Jeep VanWormer to take the lead shortly after the race’s final restart, on lap 23. But he couldn’t maintain his speed running up top and gradually lost ground to the leaders.

Chub noted that if he had caught a caution flag with about four or five laps to go at La Salle, he could’ve “hammered it (the cushion) for the rest of the race” and had a chance to win.

Despite falling short of a victory, Chub was happy with the weekend.

“They were racy tracks,” he said. “You could race all over them – and that’s all you could ask for.”

Chub was unable to make up any ground on WoO LMS points leader Steve Francis, who won once and had two fifth-place finishes during the swing. Chub remains second in the standings, trailing Francis by 54 points with six events remaining in the 2007 season.

Chub will go WoO LMS racing in his homestate this weekend, competing at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway on Friday night (Sept. 21) and Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in Imperial, Pa., on Saturday night (Sept. 22). Chub’s fans will be excited to know that he plans to race this weekend with the special World 100 green ‘Chubzilla’ body on his Rocket Chassis and will have t-shirts featuring the unique car available for purchase at his merchandise trailer.
