Tire Woes Hamper Chubs Lone Holiday Week Start

BEAR LAKE, PA – Chub Frank’s holiday week was decidedly more low-key than he had planned.

With wet weather bringing an early postponement to his scheduled weekend World of Outlaws Late Model Series trip to Mississippi, the driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ made just a single competitive start around the mid-week Independence Day.

And that lone appearance – the WoO LMS ‘Missouri 50’ on July 3 at Lebanon I-44 Speedway – was a tough one for the star from Bear Lake, Pa.

Chub drove his Lester Buildings, Corry Rubber, All Star Performance, Corry Laser, Slavic Corporation, Genesis Racing Shocks, Lake Shore Paving, Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* to an eighth-place finish in Lebanon’s 50-lap A-Main, but only after fighting through some frustrating tire woes.

The problems began for Chub on the race’s opening lap, when a cut tire caused him to relinquish his fifth-place starting spot. He returned to the fray and made a steady climb forward, but his car’s right-rear tire exploded as he held fifth place on lap 35 and he slid to a stop in turn four.

The force of the blown tire ripped up the right-rear bodywork on Chub’s machine, forcing him to run the remainder of the distance minus some sheet metal. He persevered to salvage a top-10 finish, however, keeping him second in the WoO LMS points standings, 10 points behind leader Steve Francis.

“It was a real tough night,” said Chub, who as high as fourth in the event. “There were lots of little rocks in the track surface and they were cutting down tires unless you were lucky.”

Chub was seen after the race kneeling in the middle of the track’s emptying pit area, hammering away on a piece of his car’s bodywork to straighten it out. But the immediate repair work wasn’t needed for the weekend since the two-day ‘Freedom 100’ at Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., was postponed to an undetermined date early on Thursday morning. Heavy rain that already drenched the facility and a dire forecast for Friday and Saturday prompted the decision to call off the weekend’s activities.

Chub used the postponement as an opportunity to return early to his shop and take a breather while gearing up for a second-half assault on the WoO LMS championship. He did not race for the remainder of the holiday week.
