BEAR LAKE, PA – Oct. 1, 2007 – Chub Frank
wasn’t able to capture the United Late Model Series Priority Care Race
Fans 50 for the second consecutive year on Saturday night, but his weekend
stop at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa., still provided him a
thrill. The superstar driver known as ‘Chubzilla’ kicked off the one-third-mile track’s two-day show in fine fashion, winning Friday night’s 30-lap ULMS preliminary feature. His march to victory in the event was worth a cool $5,000 plus lap money. It was Chub’s ninth overall triumph of the 2007 season – and second in as many weeks with the distinctive green ‘Chubzilla’ graphics package adorning his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. Chub decided to run his ‘Chubzilla’ car, which he debuted in the recent World 100 at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway, in front of his home western Pennsylvania fans for the last two weeks. Chub returned to McKean County on Saturday night hoping to sweep the weekend by winning the Priority Care Race Fans 50. But the event’s defending champion was never a serious factor, settling for a quiet 11th-place finish in the $12,000-to-win A-Main. Robbie Blair scored a flag-to-flag victory in the 50-lapper, with Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs – Chub’s former crew chief – taking the runner-up spot. In the final analysis, Chub’s hopes were all but dashed as soon as he drew for his heat-race starting position. He took the green flag in his prelim from the eighth spot and, with the track already turning one-lane, he couldn’t move forward to a transfer position. Though Chub did win the B-Main, he was unable to make much headway in a feature that saw passing at a premium. “By the time we went out for the second heat on Saturday, you couldn’t pass,” said Chub, noting that the MCR surface was much racier on Friday night. “The track just rubbered up. We had a good car, but we had to work hard just to pass the few cars we did in the feature. “There was just too much racing on the track. The show started early in the daylight, there were a lot of cars, and we ran our (Late Model) feature last. That just takes a toll on the racetrack. “I think the weekend is really a great event,” continued Chub. “Next year (McKean County officials) just have to keep working the racetrack all night. They can’t let it rubber up again like it did on Saturday night.” Chub plans to take the coming off from racing to gear up for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series events on Oct. 10 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., and Oct. 12-13 at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn. Currently second in the WoO LMS standings, Chub is hoping to cut his 40-point deficit to Steve Francis so his hopes for the title will remain alive entering the ‘Outlaws World Finals’ on Nov. 1-3 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway. |
